The platform piloted across five hypermarket stores, intercepting over 4,000 potential UPI failures in one month.

Mumbai, 1 September, 2026: Innoviti Technologies, India's leading industry-specialised payment solutions company, today announced the launch of Innoviti Unipay's UPI Acquirer Backup Platform, an artificial intelligence system designed to prevent UPI transaction failures at checkout. The platform automatically detects early signs of acquirer instability and reroutes UPI Dynamic QR traffic to a healthier acquirer within micro-seconds, without any change to merchant systems or reconciliation processes, and without the consumer having to scan the QR again.
The launch addresses a persistent, largely invisible cost for organised retail. When a UPI payment fails, customers frequently default to a credit card on the spot, a switch that moves the transaction from a near-zero-cost rail to one carrying a merchant discount rate (MDR) of 90 to 150 basis points.
Until now, retailers have had only reactive options when a UPI payment failed: store staff manually switching acquirers on the EDC device after the fact, or simply accepting the customer's card as payment. Cohort data shows that of every 100 UPI failures, 10 convert to a card transaction at the same counter within 90 seconds, faster than any manual intervention can respond.
In a pilot done for a sample hypermarket cohort, the UPI failure rates were running at between 9% and 12.5% a month. At an average ticket size of Rs. 3,000, this was corresponding to an additional MDR impact of Rs.2.6 crore annually for the 100-store retail chain. After the pilot this was reduced by 90%, saving over Rs. 2 Cr annually for the merchant.
Innoviti's platform changes the point of intervention. Because UPI Dynamic QR is a push-based rail initiated by the customer's app, the only way to prevent a failure is to act before the QR code is even presented, which requires continuously modelling each acquirer's live health. Unsupervised learning models score every connected acquirer against its own historical response pattern; when an acquirer's behaviour drifts from its baseline, the system kicks in. The platform requires no operational change at the merchant end and had no impact on daily reconciliation.
"UPI has become the default choice at checkout for most Indian consumers, but every failed transaction is a moment we risk losing to a higher-cost card payment instead. Retailers have long dealt with this reactively, switching acquirers manually after the fact, by which time the customer has often already reached for a card. Our UPI Acquirer Backup Platform changes that by acting before the failure ever reaches the counter, using machine learning to continuously read acquirer health and reroute traffic seconds ahead of time. It's a small shift in infrastructure with an outsized impact on retail margins, and it reflects where we believe the next phase of payments is headed: creating value at the exact moment a transaction happens, not just processing it."

Innoviti Unipay's UPI Acquirer Backup Platform is available now to enterprise retailers on Innoviti's acquiring stack, with no additional merchant-side integration required.
