Mumbai, April 18, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully completed the break-through of the proposed 1.65-km underground tunnel from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (T2) to Andheri East Metro Route 7A in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Minister for Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Mangal Prabhat Lodha, MLA Parag Alwani, Metropolitan Commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Sanjay Mukherjee, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Ashwin Mudgal and others were present on the occasion.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis initially sought information about the project from the officials concerned. He also pressed the key and started the 'break through' work. He then inspected the work. The tunnel is located downstream on Metro 7A. The tunnel will be located between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Station and Airport Colony Station. This metro connection will be an important milestone for the overall metro network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This metro line will connect Mira-Bhayander and later Vasai-Virar area of Mumbai Metropolitan Region with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Thane and Navi Mumbai international airports will also be connected by metro lines. 59 per cent of the work on this metro line has been completed.
About Metro Route 7A..
The length of this metro line is 3.4 kilometers, of which the elevated route is 0.94 kilometers and the underground is 2.50 kilometers. The line will have two stations. One station will be at Airport Colony on the elevated line and the other at the underground Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The elevated metro line will be 0.57 kilometers The length of the double tunnel is 2.035 kilometers. The first drive of the downline tunnel began on 1 September 2023. The tunnel is 1.65 km long and 1180 rings have been installed for lining. The tunnel has a diameter of 6.35 meters and six sections use special design precast rings.
In September 2023, the TBM machine was lowered 30 metres below the ground. The break-through of the tunnel was completed above Metro Route 3, under the foot of Sahar elevated roads, crossing large sewage lines and water ways and overcoming various difficulties. With this metro line, Mumbaikars will be able to experience comfortable travel from Colaba to Vasai Virar, Mira Bhayander.
This route will connect various metro lines in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region directly to the airport by metro. Metro Route 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) will be easily connected to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, an underground station line. It will be possible to travel safely, comfortably and easy for passengers. With the design of elevated and underground routes for the Metro from densely populated urban areas, less space will be occupied for metro construction in the airport area.
