Mumbai, November 4, 2025: Two of India's leading cooperatives, Amul and IFFCO, have secured the 1st and 2nd ranks in the global ranking for cooperatives, respectively.

The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), in collaboration with the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (EURICSE), has released the 2025 edition of the World Cooperative Monitor (WCM) — a special report marking the UN International Year of Cooperatives.

Now in its 13th edition, the WCM offers the most comprehensive overview of the global cooperative and mutual sector, highlighting how cooperatives contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economies worldwide.

The 2025 report features the Top 300 cooperative and mutual enterprises, their economic weight, and impact stories from across various sectors — including agriculture, finance, health, energy, and education.

“Launched one day before the World Social Summit kicks off in Doha, this year’s Monitor shows that cooperatives are not only vital to local economies but are key to addressing global challenges,” said Jeroen Douglas, Director General of the ICA. “Our new strategy for 2026–2030 — Practice, Promote, Protect — underscores our commitment to sustainability, social justice, and economic democracy.”

Key Findings

  • The Top 300 cooperatives achieved a combined turnover of USD 2.79 trillion in 2023.

  • The agriculture (35.7%) and insurance (31.7%) sectors dominate the rankings by turnover, followed by wholesale and retail trade (18%).

  • The leading organisations by turnover include Groupe Crédit Agricole (France), State Farm (USA), and REWE Group (Germany).

  • By turnover relative to GDP per capita, India’s Amul and IFFCO top the global list, highlighting the strength of cooperatives in emerging economies.

  • Europe and the Americas account for the majority of the Top 300, but representation from Asia-Pacific and Africa continues to grow.

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, has congratulated Amul and Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) for occupying the first two ranks among the top ten cooperatives in the world.

In a post on X, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah said, “A proud moment for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to Amul and IFFCO for occupying the first two ranks among the top ten cooperatives in the world. It is an honor to the tireless dedication of millions of women associated with Amul and farmers contributing to the IFFCO. It is also a testament to the boundless potential of the cooperatives, which is being transformed into a global model of empowerment and self-reliance by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji.”
